Holding paradox means taking a different stance towards reconciliation. It is a practice whereby we notice what feels like an either/or choice or situation in our lives, and we hold that tension, rather than try and make the choice or resolve it. We notice the polarities, and we begin to imagine them not as dual poles but as two parts we have focused on within a larger constellation. In so doing, we immediately enter a different way of thinking, which is also a different way of being. This is the portal towards exploring and connection with dimensions of the world around us, and within us, in new ways.

Holding paradox is not about not choosing a side, but it is about standing for something that is meaningful, assuming that position consciously and openly but also with a flexibility that allows us to slip out of it and slip into other positions in the constellation. This is one way of cultivating Kaleidoscopic Thinking, reimagining dimensions of perspective, and in so doing, finding new levels of agency.

This is the skill of the future, and because it is so effective, and because it is a way of thinkjing and can therefore be oriented towards any act, it is essential that we understand it better and learn how to do it, and also that we better understand how to orient it towards meaning, away from the collective Complexity of Optics and towards the Complexity of Love.

Holding paradox is the main theme behind every conversation we have on Love & Philosophy, and it is at the heart of much of the writing, philosophy, math and science we explore through various inspirations and themes. It is also the subject at the heart of Way-making, which is a term that allows us to explore the spaces holding traditional either/ors such as ‘mind and body’ or ‘spiritual and scientific’ or ‘mental and physical’ or even ‘virtual and natural’. Join us as we enter a new way of thinking that is as old as life. You can order Embracing Paradox here, or receive it on the Substack.

On this page, you can download the book Embracing Paradox for free starting March 9th. You can also find a treasure trove of resources and work from many others all around the world and all through time and space that have been finding ways of Holding Paradox. Together we can become a new earth if we embrace the exploration of planetary thinking through the lens of the complexity of love, re-imagining the values of life and self to vision out from the patterns that connect.

A living list, We invite your additions:

(I’ll eventually sort this into categories)

  • Zeno of Elea:

Known for his paradoxes of motion, which challenged the common sense understanding of movement and plurality, including the Dichotomy Paradox, the Arrow Paradox, and the Achilles and the Tortoise Paradox.

  • Epicurus:

Proposed the Epicurean paradox, a logical dilemma about the problem of evil, questioning the existence of a god who is simultaneously omniscient, omnipotent, and omnibenevolent.

  • Socrates and Socratic Paradox

His philosophy, as described by Plato, is characterized by the Socratic paradox, encapsulated in the statement "I know that I know nothing," suggesting that true knowledge involves recognizing the limits of one's understanding.

  • Bertrand Russell:

Developed Russell's paradox, a contradiction arising in the logic of sets or classes, which led to significant advancements in logic and set theory.

  • Other Notable Philosophers:

    • Aristotle: He attempted to refute Zeno's arguments against motion.

    • Eubulides: Known for classical logical paradoxes like "The Liar," "The Hooded Man," "The Heap," and "The Horned Man".

    • Wittgenstein: His rule-following paradox raises questions about the meaning of language.

    • Moore: Moore's paradox, which concerns the absurdity of statements like "P is true, but I don't believe it".

Ursula LeGuin’s Lao Tzu and Paradoxical Thinking

Ursula K. Le Guin's writing often explores paradoxical situations and concepts, using them to challenge conventional thinking and explore complex themes in her science fiction and fantasy novels, such as gender roles, societal structures, and the nature of truth.

Here's a deeper dive into how Le Guin utilizes paradoxical thinking in her work:

Challenging Binary Oppositions:

Le Guin's work frequently subverts traditional binary oppositions, like good versus evil, light versus dark, or male versus female, instead exploring the complexities and interdependencies between them.

"The Left Hand of Darkness" and Gender:

In "The Left Hand of Darkness," Le Guin explores a society where gender is fluid and individuals are not defined by rigid gender roles, challenging the societal norms of binary gender identity.

"The Dispossessed" and Anarchism:

Le Guin's novel "The Dispossessed" presents an anarchist society on the planet Anarres, exploring the challenges and possibilities of a society without hierarchy or centralized power.

Taoism and Balance:

Le Guin's work often reflects Taoist principles, which emphasize the importance of balance and the interconnectedness of opposites, as seen in the Handdarrata religion in "The Left Hand of Darkness".

Metaphor and Fiction:

Le Guin believed that fiction, especially science fiction, is inherently metaphorical, allowing authors to explore ideas and truths that cannot be expressed directly.

The Power of Imagination:

Le Guin emphasized the importance of imagination and its role in understanding the world, suggesting that the truth is often a matter of the imagination.

The Absent Silence:

In her essay "The Absent Silence," Le Guin explores the paradox of corporations, which claim to be about open access to information, but often keep secrets.

A "paradox mindset" involves accepting and valuing seemingly contradictory ideas or situations, rather than trying to resolve them. It's about thinking in "both/and" terms, embracing tensions, and finding ways to integrate seemingly opposing concepts.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

  • Definition:

A paradox mindset is a way of thinking that embraces contradictory ideas and situations, rather than trying to eliminate or resolve them.

  • Key Characteristics:

    • Both/And Thinking: Instead of focusing on "either/or" choices, a paradox mindset encourages considering multiple perspectives and possibilities simultaneously.

    • Embracing Tensions: It involves acknowledging and valuing conflicting ideas or situations, rather than trying to avoid or simplify them.

    • Proactive Integration: It encourages finding ways to integrate seemingly opposing concepts or ideas, rather than dismissing one in favor of the other.

  • Benefits:

    • Increased Creativity: By embracing paradoxes, individuals can explore new ideas and perspectives, leading to greater creativity and innovation.

    • Improved Problem-Solving: A paradox mindset can help identify and address complex problems by considering multiple factors and perspectives.

    • Enhanced Flexibility: It fosters a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances and embrace ambiguity.

    • Better Performance: Studies suggest that a paradox mindset is associated with better performance in various areas, including leadership, teamwork, and decision-making.

  • Examples:

    • Leadership: Balancing the need for both strong leadership and employee autonomy.

    • Teamwork: Valuing both individual contributions and collaborative efforts.

    • Decision-Making: Considering both analytical and intuitive approaches.

    • Work-Life Balance: Recognizing the need to work hard while also prioritizing personal life.

  • Paradoxical Thinking:

This concept is inspired by the idea that contemplating apparent contradictions can break down assumptions and offer new ways of looking at problems.

Here's a deeper look at some common philosophical paradoxes:

1. The Liar's Paradox:

  • Statement: "This statement is false."

  • The Paradox: If the statement is true, then it must be false (because it claims to be false). Conversely, if the statement is false, then it must be true (because it claims to be false).

  • Philosophical Significance: This paradox highlights the limitations of self-referential statements and the potential for contradictions within formal systems of logic.

2. The Sorites Paradox (Paradox of the Heap):

  • Premise:

If you remove one grain of sand from a heap, it's still a heap. If you remove another, and another, and so on, eventually you will have no sand left, but it will still be a heap.

  • The Paradox:

At what point does a heap of sand cease to be a heap? The problem is that there is no clear threshold.

  • Philosophical Significance:

This paradox raises questions about vagueness, the nature of predicates, and the limits of language to define concepts precisely.

3. Zeno's Paradoxes:

  • Achilles and the Tortoise:

Achilles, the swift-footed hero, can never overtake a tortoise if the tortoise is given a head start, because he must first reach the point where the tortoise started, but by that time the tortoise will have moved forward, and so on, ad infinitum.

  • The Dichotomy Paradox:

To travel any distance, one must first cover half the distance, then half of the remaining distance, and so on, ad infinitum. Therefore, motion is impossible.

  • The Arrow Paradox:

A moving arrow is at rest at any given moment in time, and since everything is composed of moments, motion is impossible.

  • Philosophical Significance:

Zeno's paradoxes challenge our intuitive understanding of space, time, and motion, and have been influential in the development of calculus and other mathematical concepts.

4. The Ship of Theseus:

  • The Paradox:

If all the planks of a ship are replaced, one by one, does it remain the same ship?

  • Philosophical Significance:

This paradox raises questions about identity, change, and the nature of objects over time.

5. The Grandfather Paradox:

  • The Paradox:

If someone travels back in time and kills their own grandfather, thereby preventing their own birth, how can they have traveled back in time in the first place?

  • Philosophical Significance:

This paradox explores the implications of time travel and the concept of causality.

6. Schrödinger's Cat:

  • The Paradox:

A cat in a box is simultaneously both alive and dead until the box is opened and observed.

  • Philosophical Significance:

This thought experiment explores the nature of quantum measurement and the role of observation in shaping reality.
